Why hydrogen matters

Hydrogen is produced by using electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen through electrolysis to produce a renewable fuel source that can be stored, ensuring it is always available.

This makes hydrogen a flexible and fully sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. Hydrogen is especially efficient in decarbonisation of industries and transport applications where direct electrification is difficult or not technically feasible.

RWE is developing multiple projects across Denmark that can produce hydrogen, a renewable energy source. Hydrogen can help connect renewable power generation with sectors that are difficult to electrify directly.

For the future of Europe

Denmark has strong renewable-energy resources, including some of Europe’s best offshore wind conditions. This creates favourable conditions for producing renewable hydrogen and hydrogen-based fuels.

With access to several neighbouring energy markets and a strong European industrial base, Denmark has the potential to play an important role in the development of a European hydrogen economy.

RWE’s hydrogen projects in Denmark will help accelerate the decarbonisation of European industry and support the development of cross-border hydrogen infrastructure.

The projects have therefore been recognised by the European Union as Projects of Common Interest (PCI).

The hydrogen produced at these facilities will be transported through the future European hydrogen network and supplied to industrial customers across several EU Member States. By connecting renewable hydrogen production with transport and storage infrastructure, the projects will support a secure, affordable and sustainable energy supply while contributing to the European Union’s climate and energy goals.

RWE’s approach

RWE brings experience from across the energy and hydrogen value chain to the establishment of hydrogen production in Denmark. Our approach is based on partnerships. We work with industrial customers, infrastructure operators, public authorities, technology providers and local stakeholders to assess opportunities and develop projects responsibly.

A competitive hydrogen market will require production, infrastructure and customer demand to develop in parallel, supported by timely hydrogen infrastructure, cross-border connections, long-term agreements and stable regulatory and market frameworks.

Our goal is a future in which hydrogen plays a central role in a sustainable energy supply.
