RWE has officially opened the new operations and maintenance base for Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm, Thor. At Thorsminde Port, a wide range of participants from the local area – including neighbours, partners, and representatives from Holstebro Municipality, Thorsminde Port, and the local business community – will gather later today to celebrate this milestone together.
Kenneth Tønning, Mayor of Holstebro Municipality: “We are delighted that the long-term strategy to develop Thorsminde into a modern service port for large offshore wind projects is finally being implemented. For Holstebro Municipality, today's inauguration event marks the culmination of our determined efforts to attract new activities and green jobs to an area with unique strengths in the field of wind energy.”
Lisette Sønderby, Director of Thorsminde Havn: “We are proud of our strong partnership with RWE, and their presence is already having a positive impact on Thorsminde. The construction of the operations building is creating new jobs and bringing about a noticeable transformation at the port as we transition from a period of decline to renewed development. At the same time, the building has been constructed with respect for the area’s architecture and with strong involvement from local tradespeople, underscoring the fact that the project is strongly anchored here in Thorsminde.”

Günther Fenle, RWE’s Project Director for Thor offshore wind farm: “This operations building will be our new home for the next 30 years at least. Our first employees have already settled in, and from this spring, our technicians will be travelling out to the turbines every day. When Thor is fully operational in 2027, a dedicated team of 50 to 60 individuals will work around the clock to operate and maintain the wind farm.”
State-of-the-art building designed and constructed by local Danish companies
The operations and maintenance base was designed by the teams of ATRA arkitekter and Frandsen & Søndergaard. Danish company Østermark Entreprenørforretning was responsible for its construction. With its 2,300 square metres spread over three floors, the state-of-the-art building houses the necessary facilities to ensure the efficient operation of Thor offshore wind farm - including a control room, warehousing and office facilities. In addition, the new building offers a lounge-style canteen and rooftop terrace. Materials and colours reflect the surrounding dunes and grass, adding warmth to the interior. From the conference room, you can enjoy unique views towards Nissum Fjord to the east, and over the North Sea towards Thor offshore wind farm to the west.
Work on Thor offshore wind farm is progressing according to plan
The offshore construction works for the 1.1-gigawatt wind farm are progressing well and according to schedule. Last year, the offshore substation and all foundations were successfully installed. Earlier this month, the first of a total of 72 wind turbines – each with a capacity of up to 15 megawatts – was put in place. Thor will be the first offshore wind farm in the world to use steel turbine towers manufactured with a reduced carbon footprint, and some of the turbines will feature recyclable rotor blades.
Recently, the first power was produced and fed into the Danish grid. When fully operational in 2027, Thor offshore wind farm will be capable of producing enough green electricity to supply the equivalent of more than one million Danish households. Thor offshore wind farm is a joint project between RWE (51%) and Norges Bank Investment Management (49%). RWE is in charge of construction and operations throughout the lifecycle of Thor.
A global leader in offshore wind
RWE already has 19 offshore wind farms in operation globally, including Rødsand 2, located south of the Danish island of Lolland. In addition to Thor in Denmark, the company is currently building three major offshore wind farms: the Sofia offshore wind farm (1.4 GW) in the UK, the Nordseecluster (1.6 GW, RWE share: 51%) off the German coast and OranjeWind (795 MW, RWE share: 50%) in the Netherlands.
