Offshore Wind

RWE is a leading offshore wind developer and operator with more than 20 years of experience and a pipeline spanning five continents

We are no. 2 worldwide in offshore wind

We are currently operating 19 offshore wind farms globally with a total capacity of 3.3 GW. When fully operational, Thor offshore wind farm off the west coast of Jutland will be among our largest wind farms in operation.

Several additional projects are in development and under construction, including the 1.4-GW Sofia wind farm in the UK and the licenced 3-GW Dogger Bank South project. In December 2023, we acquired the 4.2-GW UK Norfolk Offshore Wind Zone portfolio in the UK.

Danish ambitions for offshore wind

Denmark is a global first mover in the offshore wind sector. Favourable wind and seabed conditions off the coast of Denmark provide huge potential for offshore wind electricity production. And Denmark does not just have excellent wind conditions. There are also the ambition and the know-how of an offshore wind frontrunner in the country.

The Danish government has set a 70 per cent reduction target for greenhouse gas emissions in 2030 compared to 1990, and a net-zero target for 2045 at the latest. Denmark has already 16 established offshore wind farms with a total capacity of 2.47 GW, but ambitions are even higher. With the participation in the Ostend, Esbjerg, and Marienborg Declarations as well as a target of up to 14 GW additional offshore wind to be installed by 2030, Denmark continues to position itself as one of the most ambitious offshore wind nations in the world.

It is RWE’s ambition to be a trusted partner in Denmark’s offshore wind build-out in the coming years and a key player in the decarbonisation of Denmark and Europe.

Esbjerg Summit and Baltic Sea Summit

Denmark hosted both the Esbjerg Summit and the Baltic Sea Summit. The Esbjerg Summit resulted in ambitious offshore wind targets for the North Sea, which were further increased at the North Sea Summit in Ostend, Belgium. The signatories, which also include Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Norway, have now set a target for 120 GW offshore wind in the North Sea by 2030 and 300 GW by 2050.

Meanwhile, the Baltic Sea Summit resulted in the Marienborg Declaration, which has set a target of building 19.6 GW offshore wind in the Baltic Sea by 2030. Denmark plays a key role in multilateral targets for both the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.

Rødsand II offshore wind farm

As the service provider for Rødsand II, we are responsible for operations and maintenance of the offshore wind farm. The wind farm is jointly owned by RWE (20%) and Andel (80%), with whom RWE enjoys a close collaboration. The wind farm is situated off the Danish island of Lolland in the Baltic Sea, approximately 10 kilometres southeast of Rødbyhavn and has been in operation since 2010. With an installed capacity of 207 MW, Rødsand II supplies 200,000 Danish households with green energy.

Thor offshore wind farm

RWE is currently constructing Thor offshore wind farm in the North Sea off the coast of Thorsminde. Once fully operational in 2027, Thor will have the capacity to supply more than one million Danish homes with green electricity. This makes Thor the largest offshore wind farm in Denmark to date.
